It was a rainy two days, but the girls track team sprinted to gold. Millard West girls’ track won the state championship on Saturday, May 20th. The Wildcats dominated with 87 points while Kearney trailed all day in second with 74 points. Lincoln Southwest took third with 69 points.
Gabby McGinn, Kaitylnn Johnson, Lauren Wilwerding and Camryn Larsen went home with the state runner-up medal in the 3200 relay race. McGinn ended up with another runner-up (10:59.48) in the 3200 right behind her biggest competitor Millard South’s Taylor Somers (10:52.16). Johnson came in second again in the 800 meter, but her real strength was in the 4 X 4 event with her teammates. Johnson, Shannon Wurtele, Sydney Daniels, and Sydney Miller ran all the way to gold medals.
Girls haven’t won a state championship since 2013 and now they have now won the state championship three times.
“I am proud of my team for working hard all year, because this helped lead to our victory in metros, districts and state,” Alyssa Schlaht said.
The girls finished off the year with a win under their belts at metros, districts and state.
